No. 10 Gaels win OUA Championship

LONDON, Ont. (February 25, 2012) - The No 10 Queen's Gaels took a five set victory over the No. 5 Western Mustangs in the 2012 OUA championship. After being down two sets to one, Queen's rallied back and took the match in five earning their way to the 2012 CIS championships that they are set to host starting Friday night in Kingston.

Joren Zeeman of Cambridge, Ont. was named the final-four tournament MVP and led all players with 20 kills to go along with 13 digs and five solo blocks on the night.

Middle Michael Amoroso of Toronto was a force at the net connecting on 17 of his 26 total attacks with four digs and three solo blocks of his own. Niko Rukavina of Mississauga, Ont.  chipped in with 12 kills and 14 digs while Jackson Dakin aided the attack with his 49 assists in the win.

The Mustangs were led by Matt Waite of St. Thomas, Ont. who had a team high 14 kills and five solo blocks in a losing effort.

The entire game was kept close from start to finish, but the Mustangs controlled the game early on. In set one they were able to fend off the Gaels by a 25-22 score.

Queen's stayed out front for the second set, building up a 20-15 lead on their way to a 25-22 decision of their own.  Western had a four point run late to get to the 22 mark but the Gaels got back-to-back kills from Zeeman and Amoroso for the set win.

After falling to Western in the third set 27-25 the Gaels turned up the pressure on the hometown Mustangs in set four. Queen's built up a strong lead early on and carried the momentum the rest of the way, cruising to the set win 25-16 and forcing a fifth and final set for the OUA title.

In the final set, Queen's led the entire way with leads of 5-1, 9-4 and 13-10. From there on the veteran Gaels squad stayed poised and controlled as they secured the OUA title with a 15-12 finish.  Will Sidgwick of Toronto capped the game off with back-to-back kills.

The Gaels will now move on to the 2012 CIS men's volleyball championships which they will host on March 2-4 in Kingston, Ontario. The Gaels will welcome Western, Dalhousie, Laval, Manitoba, Alberta, Calgary and Trinity Western.
