LONDON, Ont. (February 24, 2012) – The No. 10 Queen's Gaels took down the No. 9 McMaster Marauders in their OUA semifinal match tonight in London. The Gaels and Marauders were tied at one set a piece before Queen's took control taking the next two sets for the 3-1 victory. Set finals were 25-19, 23-25, 25-18 and 25-17. Queen's now advances to the OUA championship where they will take on the Western Mustangs.
The Gaels were led by OUA player of the year and all-star
Joren Zeeman of Cambridge, Ont. who led all players in kills with 21 on the night while recording 10 digs and two service aces.
Jackson Dakin of Courtenay, B.C. had a game high 43 assists for Queen's while
Anthony Pitfield of Ottawa finished with six kills on nine attacks with two block assists. The Marauders were led by Jeremy Groenveld of Welland, Ont. had 15 kills and seven digs in a losing effort.
In the first set the Gaels took control early as they had a streak of four points to take a 9-4 advantage which included three straight points from Zeeman. The Gaels did not relinquish their lead and finished off McMaster 25-19.
After the Marauders narrowly closed out the Gaels in set two 25-23, McMaster took an early 13-10 lead over Queen's in set number three. The Gaels rallied led by an eight point swing that included seven straight points from
Will Sidgwick of Toronto to go out in front 18-13. From there on the Gaels had no trouble with a 25-18 set win followed by a 25-17 win in set four for the match.
Queen's will now move on to the OUA Championship where they will take Western tomorrow at 7pm.
