Field Hockey: Season Recap

| By:
Now that the season has been over and the team is rested and getting ready to prepare for next year, we thought a recap of our 2012 season and last weekend of play was long overdue.

The Queen's Field Hockey Team hosted our annual Field Hockey Alumni and Parent weekend on October 20th and 21st, which was a great success! Thank you to all of the parents and alumni who were able to make it to Kingston (by letter or by presence!) to support the team. The girls played a phenomenal weekend and could not have done it without your support. It was a pleasure meeting some of you for the first time, and seeing many of you again!

The team hosted a solid weekend of games at home on Tindall Field, finishing the weekend with a record of 1-1-1. The weekend opened with a tough but well played game against the Waterloo Warriors, ending in a 4-1 loss despite the solid game play throughout the first half and not giving up a single goal in open play. The lone Queen's goal was scored by rookie midfielder, Caitlin Gordon of Richmond, BC.

In the second game against Western the team came out flying, putting the third place Mustangs team off of their game. It was a hard fought battle, with multiple scoring opportunities, but neither team was able to capitalize for a final score of 0-0. Goaltender Emily Kakouris (Scarborough, ON) had a dominant game with many saves.

For the final game of the year, the Gaels pushed hard for a win against the McGill Martletts. Queen's dominated the first half, giving themselves a 1-0 lead on a penalty corner (goal scored by 3rd year defender, Fiona Downey of North Vancouver, BC). In the second half, 4th year forward, Amber Halcovitch (Apsley, ON) managed to sink one past the McGill goaltender to make it 2-0 for the Gaels. McGill pushed hard right away and managed to put one past our goalkeeper. In the end, the Gaels came out on top with a 2-1 win to end their season.

Congratulations are in order for 5th year defender, Allison Wallis (Milton, ON), who was the OUA recipient of the Gail Wilson Outstanding Contributor Award. Allison has been a phenomenal asset to our team and to the community over these last 5 years, and there is nobody more deserving of this award than Allison. Her commitment to the team and to the community at large made her an ideal candidate, and we will very much miss her calm presence in the backfield next season. Congratulations Allison! Finally, thank you to all of our wonderful graduating players (Morgan, Allison, Amber, Meghan and Marina)! They were a great crew and will be sorely missed next season.
