Late goal by Lancers sinks Gaels

WINDSOR, Ont. (January 29, 2012) - The No. 9 Queen's Gaels (11-8-3) dropped their second game of the weekend Sunday, losing 3-2 to the Lancers (10-10-2) in Windsor.

The Gaels and Lancers each were strong between the pipes on the day with the Gaels Karissa Savage of Calgary stopping 29 of 32 shots faced and the Lancers Karlyle Robinson of St. Catharine's, Ont. turning aside 32 of 34 in the win.

Offensively, the Gaels Taryn Pilon of Peterborough continued her strong rookie season adding a goal and an assist. The Lancers were led by Krysten Bortolotti of Belle River, Ont. who had a goal and assist of her own.

After a scoreless first period the Gaels used their special teams to jump out to an early lead. Alana Smith of Aurora, Ont. scored her fourth goal of the season on the power play for the early advantage. Windsor responded with a goal from Candice Chevalier of Essex, Ont. to even things up at 1-1. Shortly after the Gaels used their special teams to take the lead once more, Pilon got a scoring opportunity while shorthanded an made no mistake to reclaim a one goal lead for her team.

The Lancers took control of the game in period number three, first with an early goal only 2:04 into the period and finally it was Bortolotti scoring the winner, her 10th of the season, with only 3:40 remaining in regulation.

Queen's is back in action on Friday when they host the No. 1 Laurier Golden Hawks at 7:30pm.
