OTTAWA (September 7, 2011) - A first minute goal by Thunder Bay, Ontario native
Andrew Colosimo set the tone for a strong road performance as the Gaels (1-0-0) topped the Carleton Ravens (2-1-0) by a 2-0 score in their OUA Season opener.
Colosimo's goal came less than a minute after the opening kick as Ottawa's
Adrian Rochford put up a 35 yard cross which found Colosimo in space. Colosimo's well placed header beat Carleton keeper Simon Brown of Kanata, Ont. to take the wind out of Carleton's sails early.
With an early lead the Gaels could execute their game plan and lock down the Ravens in the defensive zone. The Gaels did not allow the Ravens to establish any rhythm on offence and frustrated their attack.
Peter Christidis of Scarborough, Ont. sealed the game for the Gaels with a penalty kick goal early in the second half. After taking a through pass to put him one on one with the keeper, Christidis was taken down after beating Brown. The desperation takedown earned the keeper a straight red card. On the ensuing penalty kick, Christidis scored the second goal of the game for the Gaels and sealed the victory.
Dylan Maxwell of Vancouver earned the shutout for the Gaels, stopping all three shots on goal.
"This is only one of 13 games this season," said Gaels coach Chris Gencarelli. "We are pleased with the victory but are now focused solely on Trent on Sunday."
The win marks the first time Queen's has beaten Carleton since October 16, 2009.
The Gaels return to action this Sunday, September 11 when they host the Trent Excalibur in their home opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:15 pm at Richardson Stadium.
