Gaels fall on the road to Ottawa

| By:
OTTAWA (February 9, 2011) – With second place in the OUA East division on the line, the Ottawa Gee-Gees (13-6) held off the Queen's Gaels women's volleyball team (11-6) in four sets Wednesday night in Ottawa.

Set scores were 19-25, 26-24, 25-16, 25-20.

After the two teams traded the first two sets, the Gee-Gees took over the rest of the match winning the next two sets as they closed out their regular season with a victory.

Myriam English of Orleans, Ont., led Ottawa in the match with 12 kills and four digs while Kayla Bell Hammond of North Gower, Ont., also finished the match in double digits for kills with 11.

Katie Matthews of Aurora, Ont., continued her strong play down the stretch with 10 kills and 4.5 blocks but it wasn't enough on this night to lead her team to victory. Lorna Button of Newcastle, Ont., also had a strong match for Queen's with seven kills, four service aces and six digs.

Although both teams were guilty of committing errors in the match, it was the Gee-Gees offensive efficiency that allowed them to earn the win as they finished with a hitting percentage of 16.0 compared to the Gaels 0.0.

Queen's will now return home to close out their regular season with a pair of matches against OUA West division leaders McMaster and Guelph. The Gaels will battle the Marauders Saturday afternoon and the Gryphons on Sunday
