Katie Matthews of Aurora, Ont., had 15 kills, eight digs, three blocks and three service aces as the Queen's Gaels women's volleyball team (7-1) defeated the Lakehead Thunderwolves (2-11) in four sets (25-20, 23-25, 25-13, 25-16) Sunday afternoon at the Athletics and Recreation Centre.
The win was the second of the season for the Gaels over the Thunderwolves and tenth in a row over the squad from Thunder Bay, Ont.
After a sluggish start to the match for Queen's, the Gaels picked up their play in the third and fourth sets to put away a tough Lakehead side.
Along with Matthews,
Colleen Ogilvie of Calgary, who started the match on the right side for the Gaels, had a strong match picking up 10 kills.
Natalie Gray of Oshawa, Ont., had another good match for Queen's recording 14 kills.
Vanessa Chorkaway of Lively, Ont., was the top performer for the Thunderwolves, registering 12 kills in the match while Jorie Daymond of Banhaven, Ont., also reached double digits in kills with 11.
Statistically, the Gaels topped the Thunderwolves in a number of key categories including hitting percentage (24.4% to 5.7%), service aces (13 to 4) and solo blocks (9 to 6).
Queen's will be back on the court next weekend when they wrap up their eight game homestand against the Waterloo Warriors and the Laurier Golden Hawks. The Gaels host Waterloo on Saturday afternoon beginning at 12:00 pm and battle the Golden Hawks Sunday afternoon, also at 12:00 pm. Both games will be played at the Queen's Athletics and Recreation Centre.
