Fisher powers Gaels to three set win over Ottawa

| By:
KINGSTON, Ont. (November 20, 2010) – Thanks to nine kill performance from Natalie Fisher of Burlington, Ont., the Queen's women's volleyball team (6-1) defeated the Ottawa Gee-Gees (5-2) in three straight sets Saturday night at the ARC.

Set scores were 25-19, 25-18, 25-22.

After a sluggish start in the opening set, the Gaels turned up their intensity and used efficient attacking and tenacious defence to take the first two sets.

The third set saw the Gee-Gees respond with a run of their own attempting to force the game to a fourth set but Queen's proved to be too much on the night as they moved into sole possession of first place in the OUA East division.

Fisher was a key part of the Gaels defence as well, picking up a match-high four solo stuff blocks. As a team, Queen's had nine on the night compared to just four for Ottawa.

Natalie Gray of Oshawa, Ont., and Katie Matthews of Aurora, Ont., were also key contributors in the win, each recording seven kills with Gray adding a match-high 10 kills. Matthews also added two solo stuff blocks.

Myriam English of Ottawa, was the Gee-Gees top performer on the night, picking up eight kills to go along with five digs.

The Gaels are now off for the Christmas break and will resume their OUA schedule on January 9, 2011 when they host the Lakehead Thunderwolves at 2:00 pm.
