Gaels rebound with 3-0 win over Ryerson

KINGSTON, Ont. (November 13, 2010) – Katie Matthews of Aurora, Ont., tallied 14 points as the Queen's Gaels women's volleyball team swept the Ryerson Rams 3-0 on Saturday at the Athletics and Recreation Centre at Queen's University.

The win gets the Gaels back in the win column after a heartbreaking five set loss to the York Lions on Friday evening which was the Gaels first loss in the Athletics and Recreation Centre since its opening in January 2010. The win lifts Queen's records to 5-1 and they sit tied with the York Lions atop the OUA East with 10 points apiece.

Set scores for the match were 25-12, 25-18, 25-21.

Matthews was the top scorer for Queen's posting six kills and eight blocks with one dig. Nathalie Fisher of Burlington, Ont., tallied 12 points in the victory on seven kills and five aces. Nathalie Gray of Oshawa, Ont., equalled fisher in kills for the team high. Setter Anna Pedjase of Waterloo, Ont., had a game high 23 assists.

Ryerson's Jana Champagne of Edmonton was Ryerson's top scorer with 14 points. She posted a game high 12 points along with a block and an ace. Haley Wolfendan of Ottawa had 18 assists in the loss.

The Gaels will battle rival Ottawa next Saturday (Nov. 20) at the Athletics and Recreation Centre on promotional 'Girls Night Out.'  The single-header game is set for 6:00pm.

NOTES: Queen's is now 12-1 in the Athletics and Recreation Centre since its opening in January 2010.
