Gaels look for victories in quarter-final action

| By:
KINGSTON, Ont. (October 29, 2010) - The No. 3 Queen's Gaels women's soccer teams begins their quest for OUA gold on Saturday as they take on the Nipissing Lakers.

The Gaels earned a bye from the first round of the playoffs after they finished their regular season 14-2 to finish first in the OUA East. The Gaels were last in action on October 24th when they topped Laurentian by a 2-0 score. The match saw Jacqueline Tessier (Winnipeg) seal the OUA scoring title with her 18th tally of the year. Elena Corry (Hamilton, Ont.) recorded the clean sheet for the Gaels, who have had 8 this season. The Gaels finished the season outscoring their opponents 50-10, dropping only two games to the No. 6 Ottawa Gee-Gees in close 1-0 matches.

Nipissing advanced to play the Gaels after they upset the heavily favoured Toronto Varsity Blues earlier this week. The Lakers took the match by a 1-0 score after Amy Laidlaw put in the game winner in the 89th minute.

This will be the third time the Gaels and Lakers meet each other in 2010, with the Gaels taking the previous two matchups by 3-2 scores.

The OUA Quarter-final matchup will take place at Richardson Stadium on Saturday. Start time is set for 1:00 pm.

The Gaels men's soccer team will be headed to Toronto this weekend as they take on the Varsity Blues in their OUA Quarter-final matchup.

The Gaels advance to this game after defeating the Laurentian Voyageurs by a 3-1 score. Joseph Zupo (Toronto) was named the Gaels MVP for the match after burying a corner kick into the Voyageur goal in the 20th minute of the match. Zupo was also key in orchestrating a dominant Gaels defence which only allowed two shots in the second half. Eric Koskins (Richmond Hill, Ont.) and Michael Arnold (London, Ont.) were the other goal scorers for the Gaels while Maxfield Materne (Toronto) earned the victory in goal.

The Varsity Blues had the bye from first round action and haven't played since October 23 when they took down Trent by a 4-0 score. The Varsity Blues finished first in the OUA East after the regular season.

Toronto leads the season series in 2010 but the Gaels have played them close on both occasions, dropping 1-0 and 2-0 decisions to the Blues.

Saturday's OUA Quarter-final will take place at Toronto's Varsity Centre. Start time is set for 3:15 pm.
