TORONTO (October 22, 2010) -
Natalie Gray of Oshawa, Ont., recorded 19 points as the Queen's Gaels (1-0) opened the OUA women's volleyball season with a 3-1 win over the Toronto Varsity Blues (0-1) on Friday. Set scores were 25-16, 23-25, 25-19, 25-18.
Gray was the games leader in kills posting 16 to go along with three serving aces. She also contributed on defence posting 19 digs in the game. Libero Shanon Walsh of Kingston, Ont. also contributed 19 digs of her own.
Katie Neville of Cambridge, Ont., and
Julie Lockwood of Calgary joined Gray as the most efficient players as they both had 40% kill percentages, while
Katie Matthews of Aurora, Ont. added the second highest amount of kills for the Gaels with seven.
Matthews and
Katie Hagarty of Aurora, Ont., also made contributions on defence with two blocks apiece. Lockwood also had a gamehigh 36 assists.
Queen's capitalized on several Toronto errors in the first game and rode the momentum for the remainder of the contest. Queen's couldn't nab the straight set victory however, as they dropped the second set by a 23-25 mark despite controlling the other sets.
The Gaels will travel to St. Catharines tomorrow afternoon to contend against Brock University. Start time is set for 2:00pm.
