WATERLOO, Ont. (October 16, 2010) – The Laurier Golden Hawks (3-4) scored six touchdowns and a rouge in 10 minutes during the second quarter to topple the Queen's Gaels (2-5) 44-23.

The onslaught of points were caused by a combination of bad field position and three Queen's turnovers including two fumbles on special teams.

“It just got away from us today and we couldn't stop the bleeding,” said Queen's head coach Pat Sheahan. “The important thing was the three touchdowns in the final two minutes [of the half]. Those 21 points in the final two minutes... you sort of felt the nails being hammered into the coffin.”

Laurier's Shane Kelly of Basking Ridge, N.J., USA, tossed 253 yards and a career high three touchdowns in the dominant win. Wide receiver Dustin Zender of Waterloo, Ont., converted two of those touchdowns while Alex Anthony of Victoria, B.C. had the other. Fullback Issac Dell of Niagara Falls, Ont. had two touchdowns on the ground.

Queen's held the early advantage after Jimmy Therrien of Montreal converted a three-yard run to give the Gaels a 10-0 lead in the second quarter. Dan Village of Abbotsford, B.C., opened the scoring with a 24-yard field goal at 10:47 of the first quarter.

Gaels Quarterback Justine Chapdelaine was 9 for 16 with 89 yards and two interceptions in the loss. He had the other Gaels touchdown on a nine-yard scramble early in the third quarter.

Billy McPhee of Burlington, Ont., relieved Chapdelaine in the fourth quarter scoring on a one-yard run as time expired. Village missed the convert to close the scoring at 44-23.

Overall Queen's committed six turnovers in the game including the two on special teams. The Golden Hawks defence also sacked Gaels quarterbacks four times.

CIS rookie of the year candidate Sam Sabourin of Stittsville, Ont., picked up 4.5 tackles in the game while Geoff Mohtadi of Calgary led Queen's with 6.5. Laurier's Mitchell Bosch of Langley, B.C. was the Golden Hawks top defender with 6.5 tackles.

The loss for Queen's sets up a must-win scenario heading into the final week of the regular season against the York Lions.

Ottawa (6-1), Western (6-1), McMaster (6-2) and Guelph (4-3) have already secured playoff berths leaving Laurier (3-4), Toronto (3-4), Windsor (2-5) and Queen's fighting for the final two positions. Queen's needs a York loss coupled with a Western win to qualify for the post season.
