TORONTO (October 15, 2010) –
Brock Ouellet (Lindsay, Ont.) scored the winning goal for the Gaels in overtime and
Scott Kenway (Calgary) added two in regulation as the Queen's Gaels (2-1-0) topped the Toronto Varsity Blues (0-1-2).
Queen's opened the scoring early in the first period on an unassisted effort by Kenway and took the lead into the first intermission.
Toronto capitalized early and often in the second period, however, as Michael Markovic and Robert Kay scored within five minutes of one another to take a 2-1 lead. The Gaels would tie up the frame a few minutes later on another unassisted goal from
Colin Bergman (Calgary).
The third began with a fast pace and much scoring came as a result. Toronto opened the frame with a Shawn Frank goal roughly two minutes into the period. Queen's tied it up thirty seconds later as
Jordan Mirwaldt (Winnipeg) scored on an assist from
Payton Liske (Welland, Ont.). Ten seconds after that marker, Toronto pulled back into the lead on an unassisted goal from David Mooney. Markovic added his second power play tally of the night forty seconds after Mooney's goal to give Toronto the 5-3 lead.
After a slight lull in the scoring during the third, the Gaels brought the score back within one on
Scott Kenway's second tally of the night. Kingston, Ontario's
Ben Munroe followed Kenway's goal with one of his own thirty seconds later to tie the game for Queen's. The scoreline would stay unchanged for the remainder of the period and head into overtime tied at five.
The Gaels ensured that the extra frame didn't last very long as Ouellet scored five seconds into the period to win the game for Queen's.
In goal for the Gaels,
David Aime (Clandeboyne, Man.) stopped 17 of 22 shots in the victory.
Steele De Fazio (Georgetown, Ont.) would spell Aime in the third period and make six saves to pick up the victory.
The Gaels will be back home tomorrow night when they take on the Nipissing Lakers. Game time is set for 8:30 pm at the Kingston Memorial Centre.
