KINGSTON, Ont. (January 23rd, 2010) – After two commanding games and a 2-0 lead, the Gaels looked to cruise to a straight set win.
However, the Brock Badgers responded with two games of their own, and took the Gaels to a 13-13 score in the fifth and deciding game. The Gaels managed to regain composure in time to take the final game 15-13 and a 3-2 score in the match.
The Gaels were led by
Katie Matthews's (Aurora, Ont.) 19 points, including four stuff blocks and three service aces. Matthews was instrumental in helping to recover during the fifth set. Queen's honoured
Natalie Gray (Oshawa, Ont.) with player of the game, after racking up 16 kills on 57 relentless attacks, as well as 21 digs.
Brock was able to dominate the third and fourth games with impressive defensive net play, especially coming from Rachel Roorda who led the team with four of the Badgers 12 blocks. Shannon Anderson had 13 kills on the night to go along with two aces.
The most stable force for the Gaels on the night was setter
Julie Lockwood (Calgary, Alta.). The Gael was active on defence with 15 digs, and the playmaker on offense with 55 assists. This went along with two aces and 3 kills.
The Gaels next play on January 29th in Toronto against Ryerson University. The team plays the University of Toronto on January 30th.
