TORONTO (September 5, 2009) – Veteran Sean Martin-Courtright of Calgary, Alta., made seven saves for the Queen's Gaels in a 3-1 win over the Ryerson Rams on Saturday.

The first half was relatively even with both teams getting their chances in the offensive zone. Rams third-year midfielder Jonathan Sadacharalingam of Scarborough, Ont. had a couple of scoring opportunities on crosses from the wing but could not solve Queen's Martin-Courtright. The Gaels also had some close calls in Ryerson's end but Rams fourth-year goalkeeper Anthony Volpe (Brampton, Ont.) came up with a number of saves to make sure the game remained scoreless heading into halftime.

Queen's managed a few chances early in the second half and capitalized on one as midfielder Adrian Rochford  of Ottawa, Ont. used some quick footwork to beat two Rams defenders and fire the ball past Volpe in the 58th minute.

A miscue by Volpe in the 68th minute gave Queen's a 2-0 lead. The keeper missed on a pass from a Rams defender and couldn't catch up to the ball before it had crossed the line. Jordan Brooks of Angus, Ont. was credited with the goal.

Despite the 2-0 deficit, the Rams continued to press offensively and made a game out of it when rookie defender Michael Jan (Toronto) converted on a corner kick in the 83rd minute, cutting the lead to 2-1.

Queen's sealed the win in the 90th minute. With the Rams playing aggressively on offense, Brooks got past the defense and broke in all alone, beating Volpe for his second of the game and restoring the Gaels' two goal lead.

Queen's moves to 1-0 on the season and will play Toronto tomorrow at 1:00pm.
