OTTAWA (September 20, 2009) – The Queen's field hockey team opened its season over the weekend in Ottawa earning just a single point in three-games.
On Saturday, the Gaels tied McGill 2-2 in their opening game but were blanked 7-0 by the Guelph Gryphons in the afternoon game. Sunday's morning match saw Queen's fall 6-0 to the 2008 OUA champion Toronto Varsity Blues. The three game set was hosted by the Carleton Ravens.
Last year, Guelph and Toronto were the top-two ranked teams in the OUA with Guelph losing only once while Toronto was never beaten.
Emily Newton of Vancouver and
Casey Tulk of Kingston, Ont., were the only Gaels to score over the weekend each netting a goal in the tie to McGill. In that game, the Gaels also hit the post twice.
Next weekend, Queen's will travel to London, Ont. for another three-game set. The Gaels will face Western in their lone game on Saturday, September 26 starting at 5:15pm. On Sunday, September 27, Queen's will face off against York at 10:15am and finish the weekend against Waterloo at 2:15pm.
