KINGSTON, Ont. (November 20, 2009) – Colleen Ogilvie of Calgary, Alta., and Natalie Gray of Oshawa, Ont., had 14 and 13 kills respectively to help the Gaels beat the UofT Varsity Blues in five sets in Kingston Friday evening.
The first set saw the Gaels come out strong with Gray putting together string of hard kills. This helped the Gaels finish the set 25-19 to take the early lead. The second set saw the Gaels struggling, making small errors which compounded on themselves. To add to the difficulties Toronto's Heather Bansley had a strong set, putting her hits around the Gaels' blocks. The Gaels lost the set 25-12.
The Gael's had a much stronger third set with an offensive push. Katie Matthews of Aurora, Ont., had several key kills. Lorna Button of Newcastle, Ont., who had remained hidden for the first two sets, came out explosively with a string of powerful kills. The Gaels took the third set 25-19. The Gaels struggled, however, to put two wins together and despite strong hitting from Ogilvie, the Gaels lost the fourth set 25-19.
Going into the fifth set tied the Gaels fell behind early as Toronto took a 5-1 lead. The Gaels fought back, however, with contributions from Gray and Ogilvie to regain the lead and win the set 15-11.
The win improves the Gaels' record to 3-4.
The Gaels next game is tomorrow evening against the Ryerson Rams in Bartlett Gymnasium.
