Gaels battle despite 3-1 loss to Western

Gaels battle with Western but lose 3-1
London, Ont. (January 31, 2009) – Despite four closely contested sets, the Queen's Gaels dropped a 3-1 decision to the Western Mustangs in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) women's volleyball action on Saturday.

Queen's captured the initial set 25-21, but Western rebounded to win the next three sets 25-22, 26-24 and 25-21.

The Gaels record falls to 9-8 and are in fourth place of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) East division two points behind the idle Toronto Varsity Blues. Western improves to 15-2 and remain in first place of the OUA West Division.

Queen's Colleen Ogilvie of Calgary, was the game's leading scorer with 18 points on 18 kills. Katie Matthews of Aurora, Ont., had 16 points including 10 kills on 26 attempts with five digs. Natalie Grey of Oshawa, Ont. had team leading 22 digs in the game. Kristin Collins of Whitby, Ont., recorded 37 assists from the setter position.

Sara Farrell of London, Ont., was Western's top scorer with 16 points notching 13 kills and four digs. Melissa Mann also of London, and Sarah Lowry of Calgary both posted 13 points. Nicole Smyrnios of London was the game's top setter with 44 assists.

Women's volleyball will close out the 2008-09 regular season next weekend against Toronto and Ryerson at home. The Gaels take on Toronto on Friday and will take on Ryerson Saturday. With the Varsity Blues visiting Friday, the Gaels still have an outside chance to move ahead of Toronto in the OUA East standings and earn third place. Both games start at 6:00pm.
