Gaels push McMaster to the limit

Gaels fall to McMaster in a close 5 set match
Kingston, Ont. (January 10, 2009) – Queen's returned to the court nearly upsetting the McMaster Marauders in OUA women's volleyball action on Saturday inside Bartlett Gymnasium.

McMaster needed five sets to tame the Gaels as Queen's fell 3-2 in their first game after the holiday break. Queen's record now sits at 5-6 while McMaster improves to 9-2.

Lorna Button of Newcastle, Ont. led the Gaels with 17 points and 13 kills. Natalie Gray of Oshawa, Ont. posted a trio of thirteen's notching 13 points kills with 13 kills and 13 digs.

McMaster was led by Kaila Janssen of Oshawa, Ont. and Hedi Bench of St. Catharines, Ont. who were credited with 16 points each.

The Gaels would were moved by the support of the home crowd which included the Queen's band in full ruckus. Queen's open the first set stunning the Maruaders with seven straight opening points. The Gaels would go on to take the first set 25-16. McMaster rallied for two straight set victories capturing the second set 25-17 and the third set 27-25.

Queen's rallied in the fourth set for a 25-14 victory led by Kirstin Collins of Whitby, Ont. Collins recorded three of her five service aces in the fourth set, which put the Gaels in position to challenge in the final set. However Queen's was unable to carry the momentum into the final frame falling 15-8.

Tomorrow, Queen's will challenge the Guelph Gryphons during Primetime Community Volleyball Day. Admission for minor volleyball players who wear their team's colours is free. The game is set for 2:00pm with tickets available at the door.
