Queen's sweeps OUA Athlete of the Week

(September 15, 2008) – Two athletes from Queen's University have garnered provincial recognition for their play as Queen's swept the OUA Athlete of the Week award for the week of September 8-14. Receiving the honour were Dee Sterling of Kingston, Ont. and Jackie Byers of Mississauga, Ont.
 
This is the first time since November 2007 that a university has swept the OUA Athlete of the Week awards when Guelph Gryphons Nick Fitzgibbon and Jaclyn Butterworth claimed the honour. This is only the second time since September 2006 that a school has swept the awards.
 
Sterling had 5.5 sacks in a 41-7 Queen's romp over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks at Richardson Stadium in Kingston on Saturday.
 
Sterling broke a team record with his 5.5 sacks surpassing Jim Aru and Marc Mitchell who both had four in a single game. Sterling also added 6 individual tackles while helping on 4 for a total of 10 on the day. Overall Queen's recorded an impressive nine sacks, and 26 individual tackles
 
Byers, a first-year attack player, contributed nine goals and two assists leading Queen's to a 3-0 start to open the OUA women's lacrosse season. Byers celebrated her Birthday on Saturday by scoring four goals in a 14-4 rout over the University of Toronto. On Sunday she added another four goals in a 11-7 victory over McMaster. In the afternoon match-up she notched a single goal in a 9-7 victory over McGill.
