BOX SCORE The Queen's Men's Hockey team headed to Quebec for Game Two of the East Final to face the UQTR Patriotes. With the East Division title within reach, the Gaels were looking to steal a big road win and complete the series sweep over the top-seeded Patriotes. With a spot in the Queen's Cup gold medal game on the line, Queen's needed another gritty and disciplined effort to close out the series on the road.
The Gaels came out flying in the opening frame, putting early pressure on UQTR and generating several Grade-A looks on the power play. Despite the chances, Queen's couldn't solve the Patriotes' netminder. At the other end, Tanner Wickware (Graduate Studies) stood tall while shorthanded, turning aside key opportunities to keep the game locked at 0–0 heading into the first intermission.
Queen's kept their foot on the gas in the second period, continuing to push the pace and create chances in the offensive zone, but the UQTR goaltender slammed the door. The Patriotes eventually broke through at 8:14 to open the scoring, then struck again late in the frame at 18:58 to double their lead. After 40 minutes, the Gaels found themselves down by two heading into the final period.
Nolan Hutcheson (Health Studies) got the Gaels on the board early in the third, ripping a beautiful shot from the right slot that beat the UQTR netminder over the shoulder. The goal, assisted by Derek Hamilton (Arts & Sciences), cut the deficit to one and injected some life into the Queen's bench as the Gaels pushed hard to even things up.
Queen's ultimately fell to the Patriotes 2–1 in a tight, hard-fought battle. Despite a strong late push, the Gaels couldn't find the equalizer. Queen's will now return to Colisee Jean-Guy Arena for a do-or-die Game Three on Sunday, March 8 at 7:00 PM, with the East Division title on the line. Fans can catch all the action live on OUA.TV.
