The Queen's Gaels took on the Laurentian Voyageurs in a tightly matched 2-1 victory for their home opener on Friday evening at Richardson Stadium. Both teams had six shots on goal, with Connor Adams (Fine Art) playing a key role in net for the home team.
As both teams worked to find their rhythm in the first half, they held strong on defense and struggled to build up offensive momentum. The 90 minutes held four shots on goal total; two from each team. Queen's capitalized on their opportunities, scoring on 1 of 2 shots on goal. Fourth year Liam Pender (Business) scored the go-ahead goal from the 30-yard line in the last minute of the first half, as the home bench erupted.
The intensity ramped up going into the second half, with both teams settling in and generating consistent offensive opportunities. Queen's had three shots on goal before fifth year Andrea Gortana (Business) made a perfectly placed bar down shot from the 35-yard line to bring the Gaels to a 2-0 lead. The teams battled back and forth, with Adams making two saves in the second half to keep the Gaels ahead. A penalty kick late in the match led to a Laurentian goal, narrowing the Queen's lead to one. The home team held strong defensively and showed grit as they fought through extra time, ultimately defeating the Voyageurs 2-1.
The Gaels will now look forward to facing off against the RMC Paladins on the road on Sunday, August 31st at 3:15pm.
