Gaels Open Season with Thrilling 3-2 Shootout Victory Over TMU Bold

The Queen's Gaels opened their 2025-26 season on Friday, October 10th, at the Kingston Memorial Centre, battling the TMU Bold in an intense matchup. The Gaels came out on top with a thrilling 3-2 shootout victory, securing their first win of the season.

TMU struck first with a goal in the opening period and added another early in the second. Just one minute later, the Gaels responded when Megan Hirschfeld (Health Sciences) buried a shot at 2:43 in the second period, assisted by forward Alex Recsky (Health Sciences) and Alysia Grotsky (Arts & Science). Rebecca Thompson (Environmental Science) added another goal at 6:23, with help from Rhae Thomas (Arts & Science), to even the score at 2-2.

The Gaels maintained steady pressure late in the game, but neither side could break the tie, sending the match into overtime. Both teams fought hard, but no goals were scored in the overtime period, leading to a shootout. In the shootout, Mikayla Cranney (Arts & Science) scored following a TMU goal, and Taya Leonard (Kinesiology) struck back to level the score following TMU's next attempt. When TMU missed their next attempt, Cranney scored once more, securing the victory for the Gaels.

Goalie Emma Tennant (Mechanical Engineering) made 36 saves, anchoring the Gaels' defensive effort throughout the game.

The Gaels will look to carry their energy on the road as they face the Nipissing Lakers tomorrow, aiming to build on their strong start to the season!
