Queen's Women's Basketball extended its winning streak to 12 games with a dominant 68-27 victory over the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks at the ARC. A relentless defensive effort and dominance in the paint defined the game, as the Gaels maintained their perfect record against Ontario Tech.
Katrina Renon (Arts & Science) led the charge for the Gaels with a game-high 22 points and 12 rebounds, adding two steals and a block.
Mikayla McFarlane (Kinesiology) was pivotal on both ends of the court, contributing 14 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.
Brooke Hussey (Kinesiology) added 13 points, nine rebounds, and four assists while providing a spark early in the game.
Queen's jumped out to a commanding 22-9 lead in the first quarter, fueled by nine points from Hussey and a full-court press that suffocated the Ridgebacks' offense. The defensive intensity forced 29 turnovers throughout the game, leading to 31 points off those miscues. The Gaels also controlled the boards, outrebounding Ontario Tech 44-29, including 17 offensive rebounds that resulted in eight second-chance points.
The Gaels carried their defensive pressure into the second quarter, holding the Ridgebacks to just five points while
Ally Smith (Kinesiology) knocked down two three-pointers to help Queen's enter halftime with a commanding 41-14 lead. The third quarter was no different, with McFarlane dominating in the paint and Renon securing multiple offensive rebounds to further extend the Gaels' lead to 53-18.
Despite a dip in offensive efficiency in the fourth quarter, Queen's defense held firm, limiting Ontario Tech to just nine points in the entire second half. Renon continued to convert inside, while
Amy Hagman (Kinesiology) returned from a hand injury late in the game to sink a free throw.
Queen's shot 31.4% from the field and 18.5% from beyond the arc, but their defensive effort compensated for the offensive struggles. The Gaels' 86.4% shooting from the free-throw line further solidified the win.
The victory improved Queen's to 12-2 on the season. The Gaels will look to maintain their momentum as they face the TMU Bold on Friday, Jan. 24, at 6 p.m. in the ARC. Fans can catch the action live on OUA.tv or purchase tickets online.
