Gaels fall to York in overtime, pick up point in standings

KINGSTON, Ont. (January 10, 2025) – Queen's Women's Hockey battled back from a two-goal deficit in the third period to force overtime and earn a point Friday night in their first game back from the Winter Break, before ultimately falling to the York Lions in overtime.

The Gaels fell 3-2 in overtime to the Lions in the second half opener at Kinsman Arena in Kingston.

York opened the scoring in the first period on the power play and doubled their lead midway through the second period.

Queen's would battle back in the final frame however, with Mikayla Cranney (Arts & Science) cutting the Lions' lead to one early in the frame before Alyson Reeves (Commerce) netted the equalizer midway through the third.

Sophie Hudson (Chemical Engineering) recorded an assist on both goals while Carys Collie (Life Sciences) also picked up a helper on Reeves' equalizer.

With less than a minute to go in overtime, York capitalized on a 4-on-2 rush with Mikayla Totten finding the back of the net to secure the road win for the Lions.

Emma Tennant (Mechanical Engineering) was solid in net for Queen's, making 36 stops on 39 shots against while the Gaels fired an equal 39 shots on net against York.

With the overtime loss, the Gaels picked up a point with their record on the season moving to 4-8-2-1. The Lions improved their record to 7-8-1-0 with the win.

Queen's will return to Memorial Centre Saturday to close out their weekend slate of games hosting the league leading Nipissing Lakers (12-1-1-1). Puck drop is 2:30 p.m. and tickets to catch all the action can be purchased on the Queen's Gaels tickets website.
