Gaels take Game 1 of OUA quarterfinals series against Varsity Blues

Queen's Women's Hockey opened their OUA McCaw Cup quarterfinals series with a 3-1 road win over the Toronto Varsity Blues Wednesday night at Varsity Arena in Toronto, Ont.

With the win, the Gaels take a 1-0 lead in their best-of-three series and will have a chance to close out the series and advance to the semifinals Friday night at the Memorial Centre in Kingston, Ont.

Emma Tennant's hot streak continued for Queen's in the win. Tennant (Pointe-Claire, Que.) made 23 saves and was especially solid late in the game with the Varsity Blues pressing with an empty net and extra attacker for several minutes.

A lot of offence came in the first period, with three of the game's four goals scored in the first frame.

Logan Biggs (Toronto, Ont.) opened the scoring for the Gaels early in the period but Toronto responded one minute later to even the game 1-1. Queen's would retake the lead late in the frame on a last-minute goal by Scout Watkins Southward (Kingston, Ont.), assisted by Emma Michalicka (Johnstown, Ont.) and Mikayla Cranney (Aurora, Ont.).

The Gaels would never relinquish their lead. Sarah Campbell (Oakville, Ont.) added a power play marker late in the second period, with Watkins Southward and Kennedy MacAlpine (Newmarket, Ont.) recording assists to give Queen's a two-goal lead they would hold on for the rest of the way.

The Gaels will host the Varsity Blues Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Centre. Tickets for the game are on sale now and can be purchased in-person at Memorial Centre ahead of the game, or online at the Queen's Gaels Tickets Website.
