Gaels open U SPORTS Women's Rugby Championship with big quarterfinals win over Acadia

Queen's Women's Rugby got off to a winning start at the U SPORTS Women's Rugby Championship Wednesday night at the University of Prince Edward Island, defeating the Acadia Axewomen 68-0 in the quarterfinals.

The Gaels jumped out to an early lead when OUA First Team All-Star Siobhan Sheerin (Arts & Science) scored a try, with Lizzie Gibson (Arts & Science) adding the convert, eight minutes into the game.

Sarah Hardy (Nursing) and Maxie Grant (Arts & Science) scored two tries each in the win for Queen's while Gibson finished with a game-high 18 points off nine converts.

Also scoring tries for the Gaels were Rachel Cullum (Arts & Science), Ava Guindon (Applied Science), Elena Pinkerton (Kinesiology), Sophia Tafel (Geological Sciences), and Eva Johnston (School of Business).

Cullum was named the Player of the Game for Queen's in the win.

With the win, the No. 5 seed Gaels will take on the No. 8 seed Victoria Vikes, who upset the No. 1 seed Laval Rouge et Or 28-14 earlier on Wednesday.
