Queen's Men's Basketball opened their OUA regular season with a big 97-81 road win over the Guelph Gryphons in Guelph, Ont. Saturday.
The Gaels trailed early with Guelph jumping out to a six-point lead after the first quarter, but fought back to take the lead in the second quarter, and wouldn't look back on their way to the 16-point win.
First-year player
Ollie Engen (Kinesiology) had a tremendous debut, leading Queen's in scoring with 23 points while also adding a team-high five rebounds.
Luka Syllas (Concurrent Education) also got off to a strong start to the season, finishing with 21 points in the win.
Four other Gaels finishing with double digit points, with
Scott Jenkins (Concurrent Education) scoring 11 and
Isaac Krueger (Arts) adding 10 from the bench, and starters
AJ Cummings (Arts) and
Ashton Bain (Arts) each scoring 10 in the win.
Queen's finished the game shooting 48 per cent from the floor and 33 per cent from three-point range, while holding the Gryphons to 43 per cent shooting from the floor and 37 per cent from beyond the arc.
With the win, the Gaels start the season 1-0. Queen's is back in action next week, with a home opener double header at the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC), hosting the Windsor Lancers on Friday, Nov. 1 at 8 p.m. and the Western Mustangs on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. Tickets for the games can be purchased on the
