Queen's Women's Hockey Fall in Close Match to The Laurier Golden Hawks

(25/10/24) - Kingston, ON., Friday evening at Kingston's Memorial Center the Queen's Gaels and Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks Women's Hockey teams went head-to-head once again for the second time this season.  After a 4-2 loss to the Hawks the previous weekend, the Gaels looked to even the scales with their opponents by taking home a win on home ice.  Unfortunately for the Gaels, in a frustrating match of strong defense and mastery goal-tending by both teams, the Hawks leave Kingston with a win of 1-0 after a goal in 3-on-3 overtime play.

The Gaels looked to find the back of the net early on in the first period, opening the game with strong efforts in front of the Hawks net in attempt to take the lead before their opponents.  With big defensive plays by the Gaels, the Hawks are unable to find a lead in the first period as Queen's goalie, no. 1 Emma Tennant (Mechanical Engineering) has a quick eye for the puck and tracks it flawlessly as five shots are attempted on her.

The second period sings the same as the first in many respects, as both the Gaels and Hawks display strong defensive lines keeping each other at a 0-0 score.  The Gaels are dominant over the Hawks in a fashion not seen in the first as they shoot a total of 13 shots on goal.  Still unable to capitalize on any attempts at net, the score remains at 0-0 going into the third.

The third period opens with an opportunity for the Gaels after a late penalty call in the second causes the third to open with a Gaels power play.  The Gaels show their eagerness to score, though the score remains null.

The Gaels lead the board in shots on goal with a total of 25 to 13 at the end of the third period, but it is just not their night as they are unable to find a path through the Hawks goaltender to take the lead late into the game.  Tennant numerously demonstrating her skills in net, holding off the Hawks offensive lines as the game comes to its final minutes.  Tracking the puck perfectly as it comes across the crease, she makes a save to keep the game tied null.

With a no score game at the buzzer, the Gaels and Hawks go into a 3-on-3 overtime match-up.  The Gaels opened strong with pressure on the Hawks side of the ice, though could not maintain this as the Hawks caught up and slid the puck just under the pads of Tennant with only five minutes left in overtime, taking home a win of 1-0.

The Gaels exit the ice with a 1-3 record in the OUA standings East. The season is still young and the Gaels have plenty of ice time to prove their dominance over the league.  Catch the Gaels back at Kingston's Memorial Center at 2:30 PM on Saturday, October 26th, as they take on the Waterloo Warriors for the second time this season.
