BOX SCORE (19/10/24) - Kingston, ON. On their homecoming weekend, the Queen's Men's Hockey team defeat the Laurier Golden Hawks in a 3-0 shutout on home ice - Kingston Memorial Center. The Gaels entered the game after a tough loss the previous evening to Ontario Tech, falling 1-3, and with the season record of 4-1. The Golden Hawks brought a 2-2 record to Kingston.
The game began as a tough battle for control on the ice, both teams making shot attempts on net through defensive stands, though neither able to add to the scoreboard. The Gaels seemed to apply pressure in attempt to wear the Golden Hawks down in front of their own net. The first period of the game ends in a null score, with the Gaels looking to utilize their stamina and power, which has been a key factor in previous games, going into the second.
The second period was dominated by Gaels offense as two goals are scored to allow the boys to take the lead over the Golden Hawks. The first goal is scored within the first two minutes of the period by no. 19
Nolan Hutcheson (Health Studies), making this his fourth goal of the season. Only four minutes after that, a goal by no. 20
Ethan Larmand (Arts and Sciences) secures the Gaels a strong lead in the game with plenty of time to add to it, and with that adds to his season stats his fifth goal. The Gaels quickly gained momentum in the second period and changed the direction of the game before the Golden Hawks could react.
Not only was the offensive a dominant force in the game, the defense was well positioned, and the goalkeeping by no. 34 Aiden Spooner (Business) was flawless. Spooner saved two major shots on net at the back end of the second period to maintain the Gaels lead and increase frustrations for the Golden Hawks seeing as they had no luck getting past the second year. A series of fouls, including a 10 minute offencive call for cross-checking against the glass by Golden Hawks Sooklal, led the Gaels to a 5 on 3 power play going into the third period.
This elongated Gaels power play allowed no. 17
Holden Katzalay (Computing) to score within the first minute of the period, advancing the Gaels lead to 3-0. The remainder of the third period saw multiple fouls against both sides as tensions began to overflow, though the Gaels did not allow this to change the outcome of the game. The Gaels found multiple chances in front of the net in the final 10 minutes of ice time, and standing defensively against any Golden Hawk advances in their zone. With this, the Gaels win the game progressing their almost perfect season record to 5-1.
