Varsity Clubs Weekend Recap: Queen’s Women’s Lacrosse remains undefeated; Women’s Golf has another strong result

Queen's Women's Lacrosse racked up two more wins to improve their record and remain undefeated on the season, while Queen's Golf had another strong showing on the Women's side and Queen's Fastpitch earned wins in three of their four games over the weekend.

Women's Lacrosse

Queen's Women's Lacrosse improved to 6-0 on the season with wins over the Guelph Gryphons (17-3) and Laurier Golden Hawks (16-7).

In Game 1 against the Gryphons, Charlotte Sawicki opened the scoring with an assist by Tara Meikle just 30 seconds into the game. The Gaels then went on to score five goals in the first five minutes and finished the first quarter up 7-1.

Queen's held on to the lead in the second with another goal from Sawicki, two in a row from Brooke Rutledge, and one from Karsen Faller to close the half up 11-1.

The Gaels kept the momentum up in the second half with two goals from Summer Thomas and the first goal of the season for first-year student-athlete Taya Doree.

In Game 2 against the Golden Hawks, Queen's started off strong with five goals in the first quarter – two for Meikle and one each for Kenna McKee, Abby Lee, and Jaeden Smail.

The Gaels closed out the first half up 9-2 after another goal each for Meikle and Lee.

Queen's defence held strong in the third quarter, with goalie Erin Hull making some excellent saves to hold the Gaels' 11-5 lead. Queen's was strong on offence throughout the second half, featuring two more goals from Smail, two goals and an assist from Victoria Murray, and one goal each from Lee and Leah Quinn.

Fastpitch

Queen's Fastpitch played doubleheaders against the TMU Bold and Toronto Varsity Blues over the weekend, sweeping the Bold and splitting their series with the Varsity Blues.

Game 1

Queen's Fastptich beat TMU BOLD on Saturday at Garrigan Park, 9-2.

Queen's got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after an error scored one run, and Abby Jacklin singled, scoring two runs.

An error, and a double by Tianna Hope helped Queen's University Gaels extend their early lead in the third.

Jacklin led things off in the circle for the Gaels. The hurler allowed three hits and two runs (zero earned) over five innings, striking out nine and walking two. Kiyah Hurry started in the circle for TMU. The hurler allowed 12 hits and nine runs (five earned) over four innings, striking out four and walking one.

Queen's piled up 12 hits in the game. Hope and Ausha Guzzwell each collected three hits for Queen's. Jacklin led Queen's with three runs batted in. The pitcher went 2-for-2 on the day. Sarah van den Heuvel collected two hits for Queen's in three at bats.

Game 2

Sarah van den Heuvel collected three hits in five at bats, as Queen's defeated TMU 10-4 on Saturday at Garrigan Park. van den Heuvel singled in the first inning, singled in the second inning, and singled in the seventh inning.

Queen's opened the scoring in the top of the first thanks to two singles. Queen's first got on the board when van den Heuvel singled, scoring one run.

Queen's added to their early lead in the top of the second inning after Ausha Guzzwell singled, van den Heuvel singled, and Katie Morrison walked, each scoring one run.

Michelle Rath started the game for Queen's. The hurler allowed three hits and two runs over three and two-thirds innings, striking out none and walking four. Breanna Morrow stepped in the circle first for TMU. The starting pitcher gave up 16 hits and 10 runs (eight earned) over seven innings, striking out four and walking two. Abby Jacklin tossed two innings of zero-run ball for Queen's in relief. The pitcher allowed one hit, striking out five and walking none.

Queen's collected 16 hits in the game. van den Heuvel, Abi Poland, and Toryn Bosanko each collected three hits for Queen's. Tianna Hope collected two hits for Queen's in four at bats.

Game 3

Queen's beat Varsity Blues 5-4 on Sunday after taking the lead late in the game. Queen's were down 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Sarah van den Heuvel singled, scoring two runs.

Queen's were the first to get on the board in the first when van den Heuvel singled, scoring one run.

The Varsity Blues took the lead in the top of the second.

Queen's took the lead in the bottom of the third inning after Ausha Guzzwell tripled, and van den Heuvel grounded out, each scoring one run.

Abby Jacklin earned the win for Queen's. The hurler gave up nine hits and four runs over seven innings, striking out seven and walking two.

van den Heuvel drove the middle of the lineup, leading Queen's with three runs batted in. The cleanup hitter went 2-for-3 on the day. van den Heuvel, Guzzwell, and Sara Salvucci each collected two hits for Queen's.

Game 4

Queen's had trouble keeping up with Varsity Blues in an 8-1 loss on Sunday at Garrigan Park.

Sophia Lueschner took the loss for Queen's. The pitcher went three and two-thirds innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on three hits, striking out three and walking five.

Avery Cobban led the team with one run batted in. Abby Jacklin went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead Queen's in hits. Michelle Rath stole two bases.

Golf

Queen's Women's Golf finished second overall at the Waterloo/Laurier Invitational with a two-day total of 480, just five strokes behind the first place Toronto Varsity Blues.

The Gaels' Katie Neville won a second straight individual event, with a final score of 153. Neville has now individually medaled in every event this season. Neville started the season with a bronze and then back to back golds. 

On the men's side, Luke Macpherson's second round bogey free 68 propelled him into 2nd place for the event, while the men finished in a tie for ninth overall.

Queen's Golf also competed in the Guelph Invitational on Monday. The Women's team won the overall event, with Neville grabbing another podium, finishing third in Individual results. Rachel Demaine had her best individual performance of her four-year career at the event as well, placing fourth.

Field Hockey

Queen's Field Hockey travelled to Guelph, Ont. this past Saturday to go up against the Guelph Gryphons. The game remained 0-0 for the first 30 minutes. Early in the second half, captain Ellie Duggan scored on a penalty stroke. Queen's maintained strong defence despite many penalty corners against. It was a hard-fought game that ended with a 1-1 tie as Guelph scored in the last four minutes of the game.

On Sunday, Queen's played at home against the Waterloo Warriors. Waterloo came out strong and scored at the five-minute mark. The Gaels continued to play with grit. Captain Monica Johnston scored a stealthy goal in the third quarter. The score ended 3-1 for Waterloo. It was a tough loss for the Gaels, their first of the season, but they played with intensity until the very end. 

The Gaels will be playing two games against the Toronto Varsity Blues this weekend, playing at home on Saturday and travelling to Toronto, Ont. on Sunday. 

Water Polo

Queen's Men's and Women's Water Polo got their National Collegiate Water Polo (NCWP) seasons off to a start this weekend in Toronto at U of T Pool with identical 2-2 records.

Saturday, the Men's team went 2-0 with an early 16-14 win over McMaster that was followed by a 12-10 win over Michigan State. Sunday was a tougher day with a morning setback, losing to 23-5 to Western before a 19-3 afternoon loss to Toronto.
Leading scorers for the Men's team were George Huang with seven, Caiomyn Fitzgerald and Matt Le Roux with six each, and rookie Kristijan Markovski with five.

The Women's team split games both days with a 15-7 win over McMaster to start Saturday and an evening 12-2 loss to an Ottawa club team, Capital Wave.

Sunday, the pattern repeated with an early 10-7 win over Carleton followed by a 10-6 loss to the Ottawa Gee-Gees. The result leave the Women's team with a 2-1 record in NCWP play.

Leading scorers for women were Ally Rowe with nine, and Ry Kay with eight.

Queen's Men's and Women's Water Polo are back in action next Sunday in Ottawa.
