Purboo records shutout, Yantsis scores two as Gaels top Varsity Blues

KINGSTON, Ont. (Jan. 19, 2024) - Queen's Men's Hockey came out on top against Toronto Varsity Blues with final score of 3-0 for the Gaels at Memorial Center Arena on Friday, January 19th, 2024. 
 
The first period consisted of many penalties and close scoring opportunities for both teams, starting up the age-old rivalry between the Gaels and the Varsity Blues. Queen's opened up the game with a goal by Jonathan Yantsis tipped in from Owen Lalonde's shot from the point. The Varsity Blues couldn't answer the goal, so the first period ended with a score of 1-0 for Queen's. 
 
The Gaels kept the intensity into the second period, with a goal by Alex Roberts five minutes in. Similar to the first, the Varsity Blues couldn't answer this goal, finishing the second period with a score of 2-0 for Queen's.
 
The third period was a close fight between both teams, with many close calls and intense power plays. Within two minutes left in the game, the Varsity Blues pulled their goalie in an attempt to come back against the Gaels, but Jonathan Yantsis scored on the empty net, bringing the final score of the game to 3-0 for Queen's. 
 
Christian Purboo, who played in goal, had a total of 18 shots on net, letting in zero and finishing with a shutout. 
 
After this game, the Gaels' overall standing will rise to 13-8-0, and the men will be back in action on January 20th, where they will take on the Concordia Stingers in Montreal.
