Rachel Cullum runs for a try

Late try leads Gaels past Guelph to maintain perfect record

KINGSTON, Ont. (Sept. 23) - Queen's Women's Rugby pulled out a late 25-20 win over the Guelph Gryphons in a rematch of last year's OUA Championship Game.

Trailing 20-18 with just over a minute to play, Rachel Cullum (Ottawa, Ont.) completed a fantastic play by the Gaels, securing a great pass and running for the try to give Queen's the lead. Lizzie Gibson (Caledon, Ont.) converted the try and Queen's held on for the final minutes to secure the win.

After the two teams traded penalty converts early in the contest to be deadlocked at 6-6, the Gaels scored two tries late in the first half to take an 18-6 lead into half time. Cullum scored the game's first try in the 38th minute after a long run before Carmen Izyk (Blackie, Alta.) completed a strong passing play by Queen's with another long run for a try, converted by Gibson.

The Gryphons started the second half with two tries and converts to take a late two-point lead, before Cullum and the Gaels' late heroics led to the big win.

With the win, Queen's improved their record to 4-0 on the season, while Guelph's record fell to 3-1 with the loss.

Queen's returns to the pitch next weekend, taking on the Brock Badgers in St. Catharines, Ont. on Friday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m.
