Gaels fall to Lakers in Round 1 of OUA Playoffs

Queen's Women's Hockey lost to the Nipissing Lakers 5-3 Friday night in Powassan, Ont. WIth the loss, the Gaels dropped the quarterfinals series to the Lakers 2-0 and were eliminated from the OUA Playoffs.

After a scoreless first period, Nipissing scored three goals in the first 11 minutes of the second period to build a 3-0 lead. Ashley Taciuk opened the scoring for the Lakers 4:15 into the second period before Emma Neff and Emma Thomas both found the back of the net to grow Nipissing's lead.

The Gaels would claw one back before the end of the period when Carys Collie scored on a goal assisted by Rebecca Thompson at 17:08.

Queen's comeback continued in the third period, with Alyson Reeves scoring midway through the frame to pull the Gaels to within one. Sophie Hudson and Sarah Campbell recorded assists on the goal.

That would be as close as Queen's would get however, with Maria Dominica responding for the Lakers less than a minute later and Maggie McKee restoring Nipissing's three-goal lead late in the period.

The Gaels fought hard to the end, with Campbell scoring in the last minute of play on a goal assisted by Alex Maw and Scout Watkins-Southward, but the Lakers held on for the two-goal win and the 2-0 series victory.

Queen's were outshot 29-27 in the loss with Vanessa Campeau making 24 saves in net for the Gaels.

Queen's Women's Hockey finished the regular season third in the OUA East Division standings with a 13-10-3-1 record before falling to Nipissing in the OUA quarterfinals.
