Big second half sends Queen's Men's Basketball past Lakehead

KINGSTON, Ont. (Feb. 10, 2023) - Queen's Men's Basketball beat the Lakehead Thunderwolves 80-65 at the Athletic and Recreation Centre (ARC) on Friday night.

The first quarter was close, with the score going back and forth. After a tough battle in the first, David Ayon closed out the first quarter with a buzzer-beater, ending with a 19-19 score.

The second quarter continued to be a close fight, with both teams receiving many fouls during a tough quarter. Halfway through, Queen's started to take the lead, but Lakehead came back in the end, closing out the second with a 37-37 score.

The third quarter turned the game around for Queen's, as Cole Syllas racked in points and made impressive plays. Michael Kelvin II helped out with a great rebound that contributed to a successful play for Queen's. The Gaels pulled through in the third quarter, finishing it with a score of 58-55.

Queen's continued with their momentum from the third and kept the lead during the fourth quarter. Making some good plays both offensively and defensively, the Gaels pulled ahead even further.

Cole Syllas finished the game with 20 points, Cameron Bett with 16, Connor Kelly with 10, and Michael Kelvin II also with 10.

The win brought Queen's record to 15-4, and the Gaels remained in second place in the OUA East standings.

Queen's Men's Basketball will return to the court on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 3 p.m. against the York Lions in Toronto, Ont.
