Gaels lose tight semifinal matchup to host Laval, to play for bronze at U SPORTS Women's Rugby Championship

Queen's Women's Rugby dropped a tight 10-8 contest to the host Laval Rouge et Or in the U SPORTS Women's Rugby semifinal Friday night in Laval, Que.

With the loss, the Gaels will end their championship in the bronze medal game, taking on familiar rivals the Guelph Gryphons, on Sunday.

Laval opened the scoring with a penalty convert to take a 3-0 lead, a lead they would hold going into half time.

The Rouge et Or would add to their lead in the second half before Queen's began their comeback, with Lizzie Gibson (Caledon, Ont.) recording a penalty convert and Siobhan Sheerin (Toronto, Ont.) adding a late try.

Down just two points, the Gaels made a push late in the game but the hosts were able to hold on for the victory.

Izzy Page (Markham, Ont.) was named the Player of the Game for the Gaels.
