Gaels fall to Mustangs in U SPORTS Women’s Soccer Consolation semifinals

Queen's played their final game of the 2023 U SPORTS Women's Soccer Championship on Friday afternoon against Western. The Mustangs beat the Gaels 5-2.

The match began in Western's favour with lots of momentum. Western put up three goals in the first half.

The first came from Gabby Kohut in the 13th minute after she followed her ball in through Queen's keeper Kristin Tynan. Kohut also scored the second after an assist from Maya Lankin. The third came from Reese Fowler off of a Western corner.

Then, in the 41st minute, Queen's responded to get on the board. Mattson Strickler carried the ball into the box and Leda Naihin exploded up the right side ready for the cross. With Strickler's pass, Naihin drilled the ball to the top left corner for the Gaels' first goal of the game.

From there, the momentum shifted. Suddenly Queen's had more energy and more precise passes. They ended the first half on a high with stronger advances into Western's end.

The second half was scoreless until the 73rd minute when Western took another strike, this time from Nataie Abbate who found the bottom left corner for the Mustang's fourth goal.

Late in the second half, Queen's found another chance. Two minutes after subbing in for Vita Naihin, Morgan Fenton released a high shot which sunk perfectly in Western's net. The Mustangs responded quickly, however, with a free kick from Natalie Abbate which landed in Queen's bottom right corner.

The game ended 5-2 for Western, sending the Mustangs to the consolation final on Saturday and ending Queen's championship run at home.
