Gaels fall to Toronto in first round of OUA Playoffs

KINGSTON, Ont. (Oct. 25, 2023) – Queen's Men's Soccer fell 3-1 to the Toronto Varsity Blues in their OUA Playoffs Round 1 game Wednesday night at Richardson Stadium.

With the loss, the Gaels were eliminated from the OUA Playoffs.

Queen's opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Ian Ferguson (Kingston, Ont.) connected with a beautiful header that found the back of the net off a corner kick from Andrea Gortana (Vaughan, Ont.).

The Varsity Blues would even the score just one minute later when Nino Nikolovski connected with a strong long-range kick.

The 1-1 score would hold heading into half time.

Nikolovski scored a second straight goal off a strong long-range kick in the 53rd minute to give Toronto their first lead of the game, and Michael Maslanka would add to the Varsity Blues' lead in the 65th minute.

Despite some strong chances for Queen's in the final 25 minutes, the 3-1 score would hold for the Varsity Blues.

Queen's finished the playoff match with nine shots and three on goal, while Toronto recorded 11 shots and six on goal. Connor Adams (Richmond, B.C.) made three saves for the Gaels in Wednesday night's contest.

Queen's Men's Soccer finished their 2023 campaign with a solid 7-3-2 record in the regular season before exiting the playoffs in the first round.
