Carmen Izyk sets Queen’s Women’s Rugby all-time record for tries in 2023 season

KINGSTON, Ont. (Oct. 25, 2023) – Queen's Women's Rugby star Carmen Izyk set the program's all-time record for tries during the 2023 season.

Izyk (Blackie, Alta.) led the OUA in tries this season with 10 in six regular season games, bringing the career total up to 31 in four seasons with the Gaels, most all-time in program history.

Izyk is also tied for fourth all-time in career points for Queen's Women's Rugby with Nadia Popov, each with 155. They trail only Lizzie Gibson (312), Lauren McEwen (219), and Sophie de Goede (208).

"It is a privilege to be a part of Gaels history alongside athletes that I respect and admire so much as players and people," Izyk said of the career mark. "The coaching staff and players on QWR do such an amazing job to create the most incredible team culture I have ever been a part of, that allows players to thrive. Over the past four seasons, it's easy to score when you have such incredible teammates to play alongside who do the gritty work behind our points."

Izyk is a three-time U SPORTS All-Canadian, being named to the First Team in 2022 and 2021, and the Second Team in 2019. Izyk is also a three-time OUA First Team All-Star.

Izyk recorded seven tries in 2019 as a first-year player, five tries in 2021, and nine tries in 2022.

Izyk also helped Queen's Women's Rugby win the U SPORTS Women's Rugby Championship at Nixon Field in 2021, while being part of the U SPORTS silver medal-winning Gaels teams in 2019 and 2022.

The team has also won two OUA Championships (2019, 2022) and one OUA silver medal (2021) during Izyk's tenure with Queen's.

Izyk and Queen's Women's Rugby have already booked their spot in the U SPORTS Women's Rugby Championship and will host the Guelph Gryphons in the OUA Championship Game on Friday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m at Nixon Field.
