Queen's Women's Basketball came out ahead in a battle of the top two teams in the OUA standings, defeating the Ottawa Gee-Gees 70-58 in Ottawa, Ont. on Sunday.
With the win, the Gaels remain atop the OUA East standings with their record improving to 15-1 while the Gee-Gees fell into a tie for second in the OUA East with the Carleton Ravens, their record falling to 15-2 with the loss.
The Gaels led most of the way, jumping out to a 12-point lead which they built to 20 heading into the fourth quarter. The Gee-Gees staged a late comeback attempt, but it wasn't enough as Queen's held on for the 12-point win.
Three Queen's starters finished the game in double digits scoring, with
Emma Weltz recording a team-high 19 points.
Julia Chadwick finished with a massive double-double, recording 17 points and 17 rebounds while adding four blocks. Chadwick's efforts help Queen's dominate the paint against Ottawa, with the Gaels outscoring their opponents 32-18 down low.
Laura Donovan chipped in 14 points in the win.
Queen's finished the game shooting 44 per cent from the floor while holding Ottawa to 26 per cent from the floor.
The Gaels will return to the court Friday, Feb. 3 on the road against the Guelph Gryphons before hosting their Shoot for the Cure Sunday, Feb. 5 at 1 p.m. against the Gee-Gees at the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC). Tickets for the game can be purchased here.
