KINGSTON, Ont. (Sept. 3, 2022) - Queen's Women's Soccer earned their first win of the regular season with a 6-1 decision over the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.
Â
Cecilia Way (Victoria, B.C.) and
Mattie Strickler (Ottawa, Ont.) led the way for the Gaels offensively with two goals each.
Jenna Matsukubo (Barrie, Ont.) showed her speed with two assists on the day. Lots of firsts for the Gaels, with three of their four goal scorers getting their first goals for Queen's in the match.
Â
Way closed Queen's scoring in the 68th minute with an incredible free kick just outside the box, curling it around the wall to hit the top right corner. "I have been practicing that," Way said after the game. "So when I got that in, I was very excited."Â
Â
Mattie Strickler opened the scoring in the 6th minute with her first goal as a Gael, assisted by Matsukubo.
Â
The second goal came from a far shot out from
Sophie Miranda (Cobble Hill, B.C.) in the 13th minute that snuck in right over the keeper. This was also Miranda's first goal as a Gael.Â
Â
Ontario Tech followed with a goal in the 38th minute, making it a close 2-1 game. Strickler tucked one more away in the first half added time, this time assisted by
Seema Sakran (Barrie, Ont.).
Â
Way's first goal of the game came in the 49th minute, assisted by Matsukubo once again. Â
Â
Not only did Way score two herself, she also assisted
Marissa Gravel (Barrie, Ont.) in the 64th minute for her first-ever goal as a Gael.Â
Â
And finally, to close out the scoring was Way's free kick in the 68th minute.Â
Â
Reflecting on the opening weekend, Cecilia added, "We improved from our first game to our second game which is super important."
Looking ahead at the rest of the season, Way stated, "In the way that we are moving forward right now and improving, I think we have lots of good things ahead of us".Â
Â
The Women's team is back in action this Friday, September 9th, as they take on the Gee-Gees in Ottawa at 7:00 pm.
