Queen's Women's Soccer complete weekend sweep with big win over Nipissing

Queen's Women's Soccer defeated the Nipissing Lakers 5-1 in North Bay, Ont. Sunday to complete their weekend sweep on the road after previously defeating the Laurentian Voyageurs Saturday in Sudbury, Ont.

Seema Sakran (Barrie, Ont.) continued her strong season with two goals and an assist in the win over Nipissing. Sakran now leads the Gaels and is in second in the OUA with seven goals on the season. 

Raya Athwal (White Rock, B.C.) opened the scoring for Queen's in the 19th minute on a goal assisted by Sakran. It was Athwal's fourth goal of the season.

Mattie Stickler (Ottawa, Ont.) doubled Queen's lead in the 33rd minute with her fifth goal of the season.

After the Lakers opened the second half with a goal, Sakran scored two in a row in a span of two minutes, with her second goal assisted by Jenna Matsukubo (Ottawa, Ont.).

Cecilia Way (Victoria, B.C.) scored her fifth goal of the season in the 71st minute to give Queen's the four-goal win.

Kirstin Tynan (North Vancouver, B.C.) recorded five saves in the win for the Gaels.

With the win, the Gaels remained undefeated on the season and improved their record to 4-0-2. Queen's is currently third in the OUA East, two points behind the Ottawa Gee-Gees with a game in hand. Nipissing dropped to 2-3 with the loss.

The Gaels remain on the road next weekend, taking on the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 1 p.m. in Toronto, Ont. The Varsity Blues sit in first place in the OUA East standings with a 6-1 record.
