After the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks opened the scoring midway through the second period, the Queen's Gaels scored four straight goals and held on for a 4-2 win in the first round of the OUA Playoffs Wednesday in Oshawa, Ont.
With the win, Queen's Women's Hockey advanced to the second round of the OUA Playoffs and take on the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday.
Quinn Johnston (Toronto, Ont.),
Scout Watkins Southward (Kingston, Ont.), and
Emma McKnight (Dorchester, Ont.) led the way for Queen's offensively, each recording a goal and an assist in the win.
Down 1-0 late in the second period, Johnston got the Gaels on the board and evened the score with a power play goal assisted by Watkins Southward.
McKnight scored three minutes later, assisted by
Sophie Hudson (Maple, Ont.), to give Queen's a one-goal lead heading into the third period.
Watkins Southward doubled the Gaels' lead less than one minute into the final frame on a goal assisted by
Sydney Wilson (Pickering, Ont.) and Johnston.
Sara Di Filippo (Oakville, Ont.) scored Queen's fourth goal of the game midway through the third period with a goal assisted by McKnight and
Rebecca Thompson (Kingston, Ont.).
Ontario Tech added a late goal but the Gaels' held on for the two-goal lead.
Queen's out-shot the Ridgebacks 37-29, with
Makenzy Arsenault (Whitby, Ont.) recording 27 saves in the win.
