Queen’s Gaels defeat Guelph Gryphons to capture Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship bronze medal on home field

(Kingston, Ont.) – The host Queen's Gaels won the bronze medal at the Canadian University Men's Rugby Championship with a 13-5 win over the Guelph Gryphons Sunday at Nixon Field.

The game was a rematch of the OUA Final earlier this month, which the Gryphons won 37-28.

Thomas Kirkwood (Vancouver, B.C.) led the way for the Gaels in the win, with two penalty converts and one convert for eight points in the game. Noah King (Vancouver, B.C.) added Queen's lone try of the game.

Colin Smibert scored the lone try for Guelph in the loss.

"We knew once again it was going to be tough. Guelph are a great program and they have a great coach," said Men's Rugby Head Coach Dave Butcher. "The boys, it's not words I've used but they've been saying all week if we play Guelph, we need to get revenge. I've actually not had to motivate them at all.

"I couldn't be happier for the boys, they just poured everything into themselves on the pitch the last five days. Some of the knocks, bangs, bruises, cuts and everything, I couldn't have asked for more."

Alex Pipchuk (Calgary, Alta.) was named Player of the Game for the Gaels while Colin Lynch was named Player of the Game for the Gryphons.
