Gray wins Community Service Award, four Gaels named OUA All-Stars

Queen's Women's Soccer's Christie Gray won the OUA East Division Community Service Award for the 2021 OUA season.

The OUA announced the Major Award winners and OUA All-Stars for the 2021 season, with four Gaels also being named OUA East All-Stars, including Gray.

Along with Gray (Vancouver, BC), Hannah Melchiorre (Thunder Bay, Ont.), Jenna Leslie (Burlington, Ont.), and Tori Chia (Courtice, Ont.) were named OUA East All-Stars.

Gray helped in the planning of Queen's Women's Soccer's Kick for the Cure initiative, which helped raise more than $13,000 in the month on October for breast cancer research and support programs.

"Very simply one of the most important leaders we've ever had in our program," said Dave McDowell Head Coach, Women's Soccer. "Christie is a real force of nature when she takes on a challenge! So engaged with our team, athletics and community…...she has established traditions, fundraising initiatives and community relationships that will last far after she has graduated!   We couldn't be more proud of her incredible contributions and the recognition that this award brings!"

Gray also led the Gaels and was second in the OUA in scoring this season, finding the back of the net 10 times in 10 regular season games.

"A dynamic forward blessed with pace, 1v1 ambition and a never ending competitive fire, Christie has again established herself as one of the top forwards in the country," said McDowell. " As a co-captain and one of our senior leaders she was integral in helping guide our team through the pandemic and then followed that up with a senior season of the highest quality!"

Melchiorre and Leslie were named OUA East Division All-Stars at defender, while Chia was named an All-Star at midfielder.

On Leslie:

"Despite dealing with a series of injuries through the year, Jenna has dominated our back line again this season and played almost every minute of every game," said McDowell. "Unbeatable in the air and unflappable in possession, she is always the anchor of our defensive effort"

On Melchiorre:

"What an addition to our team! Hannah has so seamlessly made the transition to our team and a different position that it feels like she has been with us for her whole career. While her defensive contributions have been terrific, it has been her ability to get forward and cause problems for other teams back lines that really have been so important in our playoff run!"

On Chia:

"We'd always admired Tori as a player during her years at Trent, but had no idea how much she would add to our team in her first year here at Queen's. She covers ground so effortlessly and fluidly that you don't realize how much she does until the game is over. Her quality, consistency and leadership in our midfield has been a real difference maker through the season."
