Gaels finish season 15-7, will host OUA playoff game Wednesday

THUNDER BAY, Ont. (February 15, 2020) - The Queen's Women's Basketball team (15-7) defeated the Lakehead Thunderwolves (8-14) with a score of 81-64 on Saturday night.   

GAME FLOW
It was Julia Chadwick who jumped out of the gate for the Gaels, scoring the first four points for Queen's. Despite the Gaels early lead the Thunderwolves were quick to respond with four back to back layups. Lakehead extended its lead to as much as seven points before the end of the first quarter. Moving into the second frame the Gaels trailed the Thunderwolves 20-14. 

The second quarter saw the Gaels with a stronger offensive effort as they took over the after Sophie de Goede scored two of her eight points on the night. Queen's went on to shut down the Thunderwolves as Lakehead missed crucial shots, allowing the Gaels to extend their lead to 12 points moving into the half leading the Thunderbirds 41-29. 

The second half saw much of the same play from both teams as the Gaels held onto to their over 10 point lead. The Thunderwolves were able to secure some points as Queen's ran into foul trouble, with six collective team fouls. Holding on to a 58-49 lead, the Gaels moved into the final frame. 

Queen's extended their lead to as much as 25 in the fourth but with a few late frame baskets the Thunderbirds closed their lead to 17 but the Gaels held on to win 81-64. The Gaels were led by Julia Chadwick with 19 points and 11 rebounds while the Thunderwolves were led by Sofia Lluch with 15 points and eight rebounds.
