Gaels pick up a point in OT loss to Laurentian

KINGSTON, Ont.  (January 3rd, 2020) – The Queen's Gaels (7-5-1-1) began the New Year by picking up a point in an overtime loss against the Laurentian Voyageurs (5-7-1-0) on Friday night at the Kingston Memorial Centre.

It was Ice Wolves night as members of minor hockey were admitted free to the game with a jersey and treated to not only an exciting matchup on the ice but also games, prizes and face painting.

GAME FLOW

Coming into the Gaels first game of 2020, the women had a solid first half of the season finishing with 21 points and winning four of their last five.

Within the first 12 seconds of a Gaels power play, they looked to continue their early season success with forward Alex Maw scoring the game's and the year's first goal for the Gaels putting them ahead 1-0 in the first period.

Devon Greenough fired a shot minutes later that stayed the course and went into the back of the net putting the Gaels up 2-0 over the Voyageurs.

Following the first period, the Gaels held a comfortable 2-0 lead over Laurentian.

The second period saw the Voyageurs score two quick goals, however Nicole Posesorski was able to get her shot from just inside the blue line past the Laurentian goalie giving the Gaels their second lead of the night and a 3-2 advantage heading into the final period of the game.

Laurentian's Gabby Jex would tie the game late in the third forcing the game to head into the first overtime game of 2020 at the Memorial Centre.

Less than three minutes into OT, Laurentian scored the game winner as Michele Weaver-Vitale finished off a passing play to secure the win.

Following the loss Friday night, Queen's is still sitting in the middle of the OUA standings a few spots from the top. The Gaels will look to rebound as they play their second game of the weekend tomorrow night.
