KINGSTON, Ont. (March 2, 2019) - The Queen's Gaels (1-0) the top-seed from the OUA East conference defeated the Guelph Gryphons (0-1) the fourth-seed in the OUA West 3-2 with the fifth set extending out to 23-21.
GAME FLOW
The Gaels and Gryphons battled point-for-point in the early stages of the opening set but Queen's pulled away after being down 11-9. The Gaels took nine of the next 11 points to lead 18-13 after attack errors began to catch up with Guelph. The Gaels were able to cruise from there an take the opening set 25-18 off a kill form
Adam Boljkovac.
The second set saw Queen's open up another big lead on the Gryphons.
Joel Rudd threw down a kill from the left side and Boljkovac followed suit with an ace putting the Gaels up 10 points at 21-11. A service error from Guelph gave the Gaels a 2-0 lead in the match with the 25-14 set victory.
Just as the Gaels looked like they were going to walk away for the afternoon with an easy finish the Gryphons made adjustments and found their rhythm.
After jumping out to late leads in both the third and fourth sets Guelph was able to come away with 25-22 and 25-21 decisions to force a fifth and final set with a trip to the final four on the line.
The fifth set saw neither team able to break-away from one-another. The match went past 15 with ties all the way through to 21-21. After staving off match points on three occasions the Gaels tied and then collected kills from Hutcheson in succession to seal the five-set win with a 23-21 fifth frame.
