ST. CATHARINES, Ont. (February 16, 2019) – The Queen's Gaels (14-9-1-0) picked up a 2-1 win over the Brock Badgers (8-8-6-2) to lock up the fourth seed in the OUA.
Coming in to tonight's game, the Gaels had the opportunity to climb in the standings but also risked falling to the sixth seed. However, a strong all-around effort in their final regular season game ensured the Gaels will have home ice advantage in the first round of the OUA Playoffs.
GAME FLOW
The Gaels didn't get off to the start they wanted to as the Badgers were the first to strike. Maggie Spratt-Mallick got one past
Stephanie Pascal for the opening goal.
However, from then on the Gaels took full control of the period. A late powerplay led to the Gaels' first goal as
Hailey Wilson pounced on a rebound for her sixth goal of the season.
They would go on to outshoot the Badgers 19-3 in the opening period.
Queen's kept their foot on the gas pedal heading into the second as they threw 15 more shots at Badgers' goaltender Jensen Murphy.
After failing to convert on a pair of powerplay opportunities, the Gaels were able to find another goal when back to even strength. On a 2-on-1,
Hailey Wilson sent a pass over to
Bridgid Goris who sent a shot on net. The puck trickled loose in the crease as Wilson was there to tap in the loose puck for the go-ahead goal.
That goal would prove to be the game-winner as the Gaels shut the door defensively the rest of the way. Pascal made 11 saves in the final period as she came up huge to give the Gaels an important victory.
