Gaels close out perfect weekend with 76-73 victory over Laurentian

SUDBURY, Ont. (October 26, 2019) - The Queens Gaels (2-0) defeated the Laurentian Voyageurs (1-1) with a final score of 76-73. 

GAME FLOW 

The Voyageurs started the game off with possession after the missed layup by the Gaels but could not formulate this into any points. The Gaels went on with a layup by Emma Ritcey and two free throws by Julia Chadwick making the score 4-0. The Gaels continued to dominate early scoring 10 unanswered points. 

Voyageurs Helena Lamoureux broke got Laurentian on the board with a three-pointer to close the gap to 10-3. The Gaels led by Ritcey and Michelle Istead pushed the score to 25-13 to close the first quarter.

The Gaels increased their lead in the beginning of the second quarter but soon the Voyageurs responded with a run of their own sparked by Sydney Crawford and Helena Lamoureux to finish the half at 42-32. 


The second half of the game was proved to be tougher contest for the Gaels.

The Voyageurs trailed Queen 60-51 at the end of the third quarter. Laurentian took their first lead of the game at 62-61 with 6:20 remaining in the fourth quarter. Michelle Istead responded late grabbing a steal and converting a wide open layup to give the Gaels a 74-73 lead with 15 seconds left in the game.  

On the following possession, Istead nailed two free throws for her game-high total of 22 points and the Gaels survived a game-tying three-point attempt by Laurentian at the buzzer to secure a 76-73 victory.
